With summer break fast approaching, we thought it’d be nice to recap some news and events from this school year. But here’s the problem: we’ve already heard a lot of bad news this year, from new COVID variants, to war, to flooding and fires, not to mention that lovely mark you got on your test last week. It’s important to stay informed (and to study), but by now we are all struggling to preserve our last brain cells, so instead of your monthly Spartan news recap, let’s take a look at some of the best and brightest highlights from 2021-22 at Sentinel!
Sports Success
Our sports teams did excellently this year, with many students and teams placing in district and provincial events. In the autumn season, our senior girls cross country team finished third overall at the VS2S Zone Championships, and then went on to win third at provincials! The Sentinel swim team brought home two North Shore banners for senior girls and senior boys swimming, winning the BCSS Mixed 200m Medley, as well as third in two other events. Boy’s soccer won the banner for the North Shore AAA champions, and participated at provincials. The bantam and junior girls volleyball teams got to play and win against teams on Sunshine Coast, and the girls field hockey team reached the North Shore AAA final! They received fifth place at BC School Sports AAA provincials and revived a program this year.
For the winter sports, we have the senior girls ski team winning North Shore Championships, again bringing home the banner, and racing at provincials. Finishing off the winter sports, the girls bantam team played at provincials and won multiple games, scoring points with seconds left. They received 9th place in BC!
This spring, the Sentinel Ultimate team brought home the NSSSAA spirit award banner, and Sentinel’s junior badminton team brought home the junior champion banner. The track and field team placed first in multiple events at the district meet, and the senior girls placed second at the VS2S Zone Championships, making it to provincials. The tennis team won third in BC at AAA BC High School Tennis Provincials, which wraps up the sports for this year. Everyone worked very hard–congratulations to all athletes and coaches!
Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! by our very own Sentinel Stage was a great production, as those who watched the show can attest. The company had full houses for many shows, and put on several wonderful performances. With many known students graduating, there was a tear-jerking closing night, with the grade twelves thanking Ms. Mcguinness-Gill and all the other teachers, as well as all of the company. Pre-production was hectic and full of hard work from the crew and cast alike, as well as teachers, parents, and volunteers to help move and feed the hardworking company! Congratulations on creating a wonderful musical and performance.
Year-end Music Performance
On June 8th, the music program at Sentinel held the very first End-of-Year Concert in three years in the gym. Band 8, orchestra, RnB band, senior Jazz and Jazz 9 put together a concert lasting almost two hours full of exciting pieces of many different genres. They were punctuated with special and memorable solos, highlighting the talents of our musicians! Additionally, to celebrate the grade twelves graduating, Mr. Virag put together a short memo for each and every one of the grade twelves who were in the music program, honouring them with a certificate and an adorable music-themed pencil. Overall, it was a night filled with energy and emotionーa great way to end the year.
New Sentinel Initiative Alert
At Sentinel, of course with our strong academically driven, aspiring Sentinel Students, it's always a new day, new Sentinel initiative! Here are two of the most iconic Sentinel initiatives in the past while and how you can be involved with them:
The Sentinel Political Journal
Recently established by Sentinel Students for Sentinel Students, the SPJ publishes monthly politics related articles as of the 24th of June! Written by the hands of passionate writers, well-rounded articles from nationalistic, economical, historic, local, international and Canadian standpoints can be expected from this journal. Whether you like politics or not, there will definitely be an article for you to enjoy reading. Unfortunately, the spots for writers have been filled, but you guys can still get your monthly dose of politics from the SPJ and support your friends (or who knows they might recruit members again next year..). According to the SPJ co-founders, there will only be one publication for this year (on June 24th), but you can expect consistent monthly publications from them next year! Until the publications are up on the SPJ website, you can check their instagram so you can be informed when they are published: @thesentinelpoliticalclub_
The Kairos Times
Initiated by our lovely co-editors in chief, The Kairos Times is a high school literary magazine that aims to showcase beautiful artwork and poetry from North Shore highschool students! We can already tell you that the magazine looks so stylish and chic that even if you don’t care about poetry or art, you should still buy it to have it in your room. In fact, if you haven’t already bought your own magazine, what are you doing? Just kidding; pre-orders are closed, but there is a high chance that you can still get yourself one after the pre-orders are distributed! Keep an eye out for further information for magazine orders on the Kairos Times instagram page: @thekairostimes
From pictures with Santa to our very own Model United Nations conference, Sentinel students had a lot of fun and accomplished many great things this school year. We could write on and on about pancake breakfast, Valentine’s day grams (gulp), Sentinel students’ stellar achievements at robotics and public speaking competitions, sending off our grads to their next chapter in their lives, how we marked the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and raised money for Ukraine. It is impossible to include every Sentinel story in this article, but props to everyone for making it through another school year while navigating a new schedule system, a pandemic, and a messy world. Have a great summer, Spartans!
