Walking into the gym on Clubs Day can be one of the most magical experiences – learning about all the wonderful clubs, meeting new people in different grades, and enjoying the Spartan Spirit – or the most overwhelming – the big crowd, the hundreds of options that you can’t choose between, and finding it impossible to stop by every single club. While you may be one or the other, if you find yourself overwhelmed on Clubs Day, especially since this year we had posters filling the foyer, gym and library, I invite you to take a look at the six clubs I found interesting – without the crowd.

Community Service Clubs

Helping in your community can be challenging. With so few opportunities outside of Sentinel for volunteering, it’s difficult to secure a position where you can support those around you. However, if you are ever feeling frustrated, know that here at Sentinel, we have many clubs with the purpose of helping those around us who are welcoming newcomers. Whether you want to go into Healthcare, Political Sciences, or a Green Career,  Sentinel has numerous options for you to take a look at.

One example of this is the JustKind club. JustKind is a registered non-profit club at Sentinel whose goal is to spread kindness and care towards those in our community who need a little light in their lives. JustKind is currently focused on teaching free art classes at senior homes such as Inglewood; however, they plan to expand to hospitals, schools and more in the near future. JustKind has fundraisers where you can gain volunteer hours as well as healthcare-related volunteer experience in Senior Homes. If you are interested in going into healthcare, JustKind is the place for you!

If you think Healthcare isn’t the place for you, look no further than Evergrow Org, an incredible club with numerous volunteer opportunities. Evergrow Org provides opportunities for you to engage in your environment here at Sentinel and in the community by planting trees to improve or restore the forestry around us and overall enhancing our collective well-being. There are a multitude of volunteer opportunities for students, including the Fundraiser Attendant, Workshop Assistant, Tree Planter, and Event Set-up Volunteer. If you are struggling to find a club where proactive work is being done, go to Evergrow Org. While it may not be directly related to the field you are interested in going into, Evergrow Org brings together students from a wide range of interests, including Health Majors, Business, Marketing, Photography, Accounting, and more! As a former member, Evergrow Org is one of the clubs you should not take your eye off of.

If you would like to be a part of a community that strengthens the French culture and language at our school, take a look at the Sentinel French Immersion Committee. The Sentinel French Immersion Committee’s goal is to make French more fun and engaging for all students, not just those in French Immersion. They do this by organizing fun and creative activities that showcase French traditions. Many of these ideas come directly from students, making each event unique and exciting. The Sentinel French Immersion Committee is an excellent way for you to gain experience leading and organizing events alongside the leaders. If you want to improve your French in an engaging manner or simply wish to meet new people and experience the culture beyond the classroom, the Sentinel French Committee is an excellent way to do this.

Academic Clubs

Academic clubs are equally as important as community service, as they support your learning beyond the classroom and can help in your future career. This can be seen through debating current issues, delving into problems in healthcare, or participating in chess competitions. At Sentinel, there are numerous different kinds of academic clubs, including Science, Law, Healthcare, History, Math, and more! There are opportunities for every single student to explore their passion while strengthening their academic journey.

A club that aims to promote academic achievement is the Homework Club. The Homework Club’s goal is to help each other stay on top of their schoolwork while being in a collaborative and encouraging environment. With their weekly sessions, it’s hard not to be held accountable for any assignments you have missed or are struggling with. There is the added opportunity of being able to be tutored by upper grades through difficult subjects of your choice. If you are someone in upper grades and are interested in gaining volunteer hours while helping out your fellow Spartans, this club is perfect for you! The Homework Club is the best space for you to reach your academic goals while being supported by your peers.

Hobby Clubs

While Academic clubs sharpen the mind and volunteering clubs help those in your community, hobby clubs give those at Sentinel a chance to unwind after a long day of stress. From music and art to gaming, these clubs create space for creativity and fun outside the classroom.

The Otaku club is a long-standing club here at Sentinel, centred around anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture. It’s a welcoming place for all those interested in learning more about anime and manga. In the Otaku club, they have watch parties, discuss storylines and characters, and provide recommendations! Whether you are a long-time fan or curious to explore more about the Japanese world, the Otaku club offers a fun community filled with kind people where everyone can connect and celebrate what they love.

For those curious about the world of film, screenwriting and acting, the Screen Production Club provides the perfect opportunity for you to get involved. Through producing original projects, the club takes you through the process of the behind-the-scenes work –  scriptwriting, filming, editing and producing – to create a final product you and your peers create together. You can not only gain hands-on experience doing something you love but also share creative ideas. It’s a place where you can watch your vision turn to life on screen.

All of the clubs listed above are led by incredible people. They are proactive, determined to make a change in your life, and are welcoming beyond your imagination. If you are struggling to find a place here at Sentinel, want to strengthen your college resume, or simply want to make a change, keep in mind the clubs above when choosing those you want to join.
