AP Season is Over… Now What?

AP season is one of the most exhausting parts of the school year. After months of studying, doing practice tests, reviewing packages, and drinking lots of caffeine, it can feel strange when the exams are finally over. While it’s easy to expect yourself to destress immediately after stepping out of the room, stress typically lingers in the form of other coursework from non-AP classes. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

One of the best things you can do after AP season is permit yourself to slow down a little. During exam prep, many students push themselves while cramming. Your mind has been on fire for weeks, so it makes sense that you feel tired, unmotivated or drained. It’s important to remember that rest is not laziness, it’s recovery. Recovery can look different for everyone. For some, it means sleeping in more or going outside. For others, it means reconnecting with hobbies they ignored during studying, such as reading, drawing, playing an instrument, or even just watching a show without feeling guilty about it.

It’s also important to avoid putting pressure on yourself to be “productive” every second after exams end. It’s normal to feel guilty when you are not constantly working, especially after months of non-stop studying. Try to remember that balance matters. Taking breaks, spending time with friends, getting fresh air, or even spending an hour on social media can help your brain reset.

At the same time, it is understandable if relaxing feels difficult because school continues as your exams come and go. It can feel incredibly frustrating to have to catch up on schoolwork you sacrificed to study for your exam. The last few weeks of the school year can feel harder than expected because you're waiting for summer to start, but you are still held to high standards. During this time, moderation becomes really important. Focus on doing your best while also taking care of yourself. Sometimes, prioritizing sleep over perfection or choosing to step away from a stressful assignment can be more helpful than the other option.

Another thing many students struggle with after the AP season is overthinking how they performed on their exams. It’s easy to get lost on TikTok, reading comments of how other students answered infamous FRQ’s, or discussing answers afterwards with your classmates. But constantly analyzing the exam will not change your result; it will only increase your stress.  AP exams are challenging by design, and everyone walks out feeling uncertain to some degree. One difficult test does not define you.

As the school year comes to a close, try to recognize how much effort you have already put in. AP classes are college-level courses that require determination, resilience and discipline. Making it through the class itself is an accomplishment in its own right. Despite the number of AP’s you took, you worked hard, and that deserves appreciation.

Most importantly, remind yourself that AP scores do not define you. A number on a score report can never fully measure who you are as a person. What matters most is the effort you gave and the growth you experienced along the way. Be patient with yourself and give yourself the same kindness you would to a friend. You made it through the stressful season, now it’s just the homestretch-- summer is closer than you think!
