With the weather getting warmer and more school days being crossed off the calendar, summertime is just around the corner! If you’re like me (and sadly are not jetting off to Europe this summer), let me help you make the very best out of Vancouver's scarce sunny weather!
Hiking
Despite my best efforts (and countless exhausting attempts at conquering the Grouse Grind) I learned the hard way that I’m just not much of an outdoorsy person. That said, during the summer seasons, I still strongly encourage everyone to go on at least one hike. Vancouver's stunning mountain backdrop includes a flourishing network of some of the most beautiful hikes and hidden trails just waiting to be explored!
Lynn Canyon swimming hole
If you’re looking for the most beautiful and refreshing clear glacier water, make sure you visit this stunning secret trail this summer. The cool crystal water is perfect for a quick dip after a long, hot summer day.
Tunnel Bluffs
Right near Lions Bay, this trail offers some of the most stunning ocean and island views. This beginner-friendly hike is around an hour and a half on the way up, but trust me, the view that greets you once you make it to the top viewpoint is spectacular, and definitely worth the hike
Shannon Falls pool trail
Before you book your next trip to Hawaii, looking to swim under a waterfall, take this hour-and-a-half hike to this beautiful natural swimming hole right under Vancouver’s very own, Shannon Falls. Be aware that this is an advanced trail that does include some steep hills and light rock climbing.
Mamquam falls
Speaking of waterfalls, this short and easy hike up in Squamish only takes about 30 min and has some of the bluest water I’ve ever seen in BC. After visiting this hike last summer, I must admit it has now become one of my favorite beginner-friendly hikes in Vancouver.
Other Activities
If hiking isn’t how you want to spend your summer break, and you’re more into chasing that rush of adrenaline, there are plenty of super fun activities in Vancouver to satisfy that need for adventure too!
Cypress Eagle Coaster
Spanning over 1700 meters with an impressive vertical drop of 279 meters, this fun and thrilling roller coaster allows you to immerse yourself among Vancouver's mountain tops, while enjoying a safe, adventurous roller coaster! Perfect to bring your family and friends, this attraction lasts starting June to September, and is definitely on my summer bucket list. To learn more, visit their website here!
Speeders go-karting (Richmond)
Ready to channel your inner Formula 1 driver? Only a 30-minute car ride from Sentinel, this lively and interactive experience lets you get into that competitive spirit and practice your race car driving skills!
Harrison Water Sports Inflatable Water Park
If you’re planning a road trip this summer, make sure you don’t miss BC’s very own inflatable water park! Located at Harrison Hot Springs, this park has it all. From waterslides to obstacle courses, whether with your friends or family, you’re guaranteed to have a lot of laughs and make a splash!
Zip Trek Eco tours (Whistler)
Now if you happen to have a fear of heights, you may want to sit this one out! His next activity includes a zipline spanning over 2 km at an altitude of over 7000 ft! Looking over a breathtaking panorama of Whistler’s mountains, prepare yourself for some stunning views and a crazy rush of adrenaline!
Calmer Summer Activities
If you're not an adrenaline junkie or are simply looking for some activities that are less intense, these activities offer a fun relaxing evening whether you’re spending the day with family or friends!
Beadworks Granville Island
For those wanting to unleash that creative energy, make sure you visit Beadworks for a fun afternoon of making charm bracelets or necklaces! Located at the heart of Granville Island, Beadworks is also within walking distance to some great restaurants and markets nearby, so you can totally make a day of it.
Granville Island Hydrobikes
Looking for a super cool experience downtown? Rent a hydrobike! Now, I know what you’re thinking: how is hydrobiking relaxing? Well, hydrobiking can be a great way to take in the ocean, as well as a fun way to stay active without burning out! For more info on watercraft rentals on Granville Island, click here.
Located in downtown Vancouver, this fun and artistic activity is a super cool way to spend your summer day, rain or shine. By the end of the class, not only will you have learned a cool new skill, but you will get the opportunity to take your beautiful creations home with you! This activity is definitely one I’m adding to my bucket list.
Beach day!
Although a bit basic, I firmly believe one of the best ways to spend a summer day is by going to the beach! Whether you want to cozy up on the shore with a good book, go for a swim, or simply bask in the sun, you are guaranteed to have a great time when at the beach. Fortunately, Vancouver is blessed with many beautiful beaches to choose from.
Some of my personal favorites include: Kitsilano Beach, Spanish Banks, and Whytecliff Park!
Farewell!
With the school year coming close to the finish line, whether you are backpacking across Southeast Asia, indulging in Euro-summer, or enjoying Vancouver’s beautiful weather, on behalf of all of us at the Sentinel Sun team, we wish you a spectacular summer break!
