Sentinel prides itself on its diverse and talented student body. This month, the Sentinel Sun sat down with grade 9 student, Anna Tikhonova, a prime example of a Sentinel student taking action for a cause they believe in and exemplifying the values of a true Spartan!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a grade nine student at Sentinel Secondary, and before that, I went to Westcot Elementary. My hobbies range from playing music to dancing- I play violin in the sentinel orchestra and I’ve been playing piano ever since I was five. I enjoy dance in my free time, and it provides as a great stress reliever. I have an older sister by ten years who’s actually in law school, and I look up to her as a role model. :)
What is your fundraiser? What are you fundraising for?
My Fundraiser is going to be a run at the West Van Seawall. Its goal is to raise money for cancer research, specifically colon cancer.
What are the details of the fundraiser (date, time, location, etc.)
My Fundraiser is planned to be on May 9th, 2020, at about 11 AM- 1 PM, and like I mentioned, it will be a run from John Lawson Park to Dundarave.
How did you choose the cause to fundraise for? Why is it important?
I chose this fundraiser because recently my grandfather passed away from Colon Cancer and I thought that spreading awareness of the topic and raising money would be very beneficial for our community. This is important to me because losing my grandfather was a tragedy and creating something like this in memory of him would be for a good cause.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from organizing a fundraiser?
The biggest lesson that I’ve learned so far is that I had to keep myself super organized and make sure I contact the right people. I have requested many sponsorships from companies and I have to make sure I am up to date with everything- and I have worked with the Youth Advisory Committee in West Vancouver to help make this happen.
What are your plans for the future (future career and future fundraising plans)?
My plans for the future is to participate in and help plan more community events like these! For my future career, I am hoping to go into medicine because I find science and biology, specifically, to be very interesting.
What is one thing you like about Sentinel?
One thing that I like about sentinel is that it has a lot of arts programs and you can choose between all sorts of electives and you can be very flexible with them.
What is your favourite high school memory so far?
I can’t recall a specific memory, but some of the ADST classes that I took with my friends last year in grade eight were really exciting and it’s something that I’d like to do again (especially making gumball machines in woodwork). :)
Thank you so much Anna! It’s inspiring and exciting to learn about you and the fundraiser you are organizing. We wish you the best for your fundraiser and your future endeavours! :)
