With the winter break fast approaching, the local mountains are calling. Although the snow has yet to fall in the city, Cypress, Grouse, Seymour, and Whistler are open and ready for business. In anticipation of those magical winter days on the slopes, we decided to uncover which mountain is truly the best by asking both Sentinel students and experienced members of Sentinel’s very own ski and snowboard team.
First, we began with an Instagram poll answered by Sentinel students. Unsurprisingly, Whistler won by a landslide vote of 51%. A close second and third were Cypress and Grouse as Seymour was quite often overlooked. Students cited the numerous resorts in Whistler and the overall ambience as the main reason for its superiority. The ski town is a nice getaway from Vancouver and the better snow is a good plus. For less serious skiers, however, Cypress and Grouse remain popular with the option of night skiing. It is a more relaxed environment and offers some great activities like the 24 Hours of Winter at Grouse Mountain. It begins February 22nd at sunrise and goes until 10 pm on Sunday, February 23rd. In addition to regular Grouse Mountain winter activities like skiing, snowboarding, skating and snowshoeing, during the 2-day non-stop event there is also dancing to DJ music, special evening snowshoeing tours and other fun activities.
We then went on to interview Grade 12’s Joel and Hannah — who both have loads of experience on the school team. Before getting to the important question, we wanted to get to know a little more about the ski and snowboard team. They said that the team does 3 training days at a local mountain and does 1-2 training days at Whistler. There are two zones competitions — in which sentinel typically wins in most categories — and If they qualify then they go to provincials held at different mountains every year. Joel has been on the ski team since grade 8 and notes that “it’s a really good way to spend time and be active out in nature with friends”. With that, we popped the question and discovered that — like the majority of Sentinel students — his favourite mountain is Whistler. Therefore, Whistler was the clear favourite but, that being said, all the local mountains would be an ideal place to spend the holidays this winter.
