Reflections on the senior girls volleyball season

This has been an unprecedented season for the senior girls volleyball team: by advancing to the Premier league, they have accomplished something that hasn’t taken place for several years. Congratulations!

Highlights and memorable moments include:

  • Saving some truly impossible balls during games

  • A catch-up from 11-17 to 20- 20 against Elphinstone

  • Last game of the league against Sutherland:

  • despite losing the 1st set, the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th sets were won …. Leading to a memorable win!

Reflections on the season from team members and coach:

“There weren’t any blames, rather, when a ball was saved or played beautifully, we appreciated each other….Everyone on the team has a role and every position on the team is equally important.”

“Playing volleyball has really taught me about teamwork and communication and most importantly, I’ve made really good friends on the team, but also across schools. We actually know other players from other schools and we say hi when we come across each other.”

“I love playing volleyball because being on a team is so fantastic! There’s a lot of inter-grade friendships and cooperation!”

“This team trained together and battled for every single match. While games are often intense, our players’ cheers for each other encourage the best performance from each member of the team.”

“With this team, I not only practiced volleyball skills, but also made friends and created wonderful memories together.”

“This year saw Sentinel with the most talented team its had in some years, with many of the players playing club volleyball in the off season and many strong athletes. I knew at the beginning of the year that we would be competitive so I made the decision to move Sentinel back into the premier league for the first time in 5 years. The competition was fierce and the gameplay was first class which made it a really enjoyable year for me to be sitting court side watching the action. The girls stepped up to the challenge through hard work and dedication to the team, and always gave 100% effort no matter how the game was going. Many of the coaches we played against this year approached me after matches to express their gratitude for a great match and concern at the prospect of playing us again. I could not be more proud of the girls who played against some of the top teams in the Province and represented Sentinel well. One thing is for sure: Sentinel will not be underestimated next year.” - Mr. Dave Gibson, coach.

Way to go, Spartans! Here’s to another great season coming up.
