This year, Sentinel Stage, our very own theatre company, is presenting the play Almost, Maine. Written by John Cariani, this play follows the story of eight couples navigating the complicated world of love: the happy and sad times, and the big and small milestones. The characters are funny, well-written, and complex and Sentinel Stage is looking forward to presenting the play from February 10th to 14th at Kay Meek—tickets are only 12$ at the theatre!
There are only a few weeks left until opening night and all departments are hard at work. Costume designers are searching for wintery clothes to create a cold ambience in the chilly town of Almost. Set in rural Maine, this play features many hilarious, happy, heart-wrenching, and charming moments. Producers are busy making programs to welcome the audience to the show, opening on Feb 10th. With one play per day for the whole week (so don’t forget to come to closing night on Valentine’s day!), the makeup department will be hard at work making sure each actor looks just right for their role. We cannot, however, forget about the crew. They are busy transforming an ordinary set of furniture and wood into a wooded, snowy town.
Each member of the crew also has a critical role to ensure the success of this play: lighting, sounds, and transitions. That’s right; being a behind-the-scenes member is no easier than appearing on stage. Speaking of the actors, the cast this year is a talented set of students ranging from grades 8 to 12. Among the grade 12s are Khalisa, Brody, Sabrina, Gabby, and Safinaz. They have been working hard to memorize their lines and to refine their characters in this student-directed play. Kosmo is one of the students bringing this play to life, and alongside him is Kelly. There is still more work to come, but the company is excited to be able to perform the play at its very best for a delightful audience.
There are many managers organizing many departments to ensure the success of the play. Kalina, a set manager, has been in the theatre company since grade 8 and has quickly risen to manage a large number of crew members. She personally feels that everyone in the theatre “is a close-knit family." Throughout the last four years, she has “made best friends and connections that could not have been made in an outside environment.” There’s no question that this year’s production will continue to foster new connections as the theatre company ready themselves for Almost, Maine.
Sentinel Stage is full of committed, talented, and passionate students who have the drive necessary to put on this show. Over the months of effort and creativity, they form strong bonds with each member as they acquire a sense of camaraderie and solidarity. They are a joyful group of individuals that is always welcome to new members! In order words, join theatre company to partake in this celebration of acting, directing, mentoring, producing, and pure performance. Finally, don’t forget to attend the play Almost, Maine. I can assure you that it is not one to miss.
