New Year, New Schedule: Sentinel’s New Semester System 2021/22

As we have gradually settled into the semester system within these past two months, students have witnessed drastic shifts to teaching methods and curriculums. The new system includes two semesters, each lasting 86 days. Whether they are grade eights newly adjusting to high school or seniors preparing for post-secondary, students at Sentinel have formed opinions regarding this new timetable structure.

There are those who have preferred schedules from previous years more suited to their learning conventions. As Victor, in grade 12, noted, “I find it difficult to adapt to taking 4 classes at once rather than the 2 classes seen in the quarter system.” Because now the year is split up into twenty-week intervals of four concurrent courses, there are suddenly twice as many courses running at the same time compared to last year.

On the other hand, some students have found the new pace has been beneficial to their learning. Minhtri, an eleventh grader, pointed out that the semester system “helps me manage my time and...organize my courses and homework a lot better as well.” He also says that because the courses are not as condensed, he is able to devote more time to study and prepare for tests. Similarly, other students have said that there is reduced stress and overall better mental health. Alyssa, a grade ten student, agrees that “there is now a chance to digest information given to us instead of cramming everything in your head the day before doing a test.” If you are the type of student who wishes to explore a variety of learning styles and approaches, the semester system may work well for you!

New students at Sentinel this year also have a take on their new environment. Eighth graders Bella and Charlotte felt like their transition to high school was smooth, and while they have yet to experience different schedules, they enjoy the current timetable: “We like that you can focus on something for a longer period of time which allows you to look at different methods or strategies for comprehension.”

It is normal to feel overwhelmed and unaccustomed to the new changes—remember that there are numerous people you can always reach out to, whether it is a counsellor, a teacher, or your friends. Despite the challenges you may encounter, know that you are never alone. Take advantage of the opportunities such as X-blocks for extra support and in-person learning for spending time with friends in the classroom to live your school year to the fullest!
