Making them and Keeping them: New Year's Resolutions

Reasonable resolutions create results

New year, new me, right? We make resolutions and promises to ourselves every year in the hopes of self-improvement. Many of those promises end up broken. But, they don’t have to. With a good mindset and correctly made resolutions, we can achieve more than we thought was possible.

Making resolutions

Make specific resolutions! When resolutions are specific, they are not only clearer but also easier to achieve. We often create overly complicated and overly ambitious resolutions, like the goal to “eat healthier.” Instead, we could try making goals to “eat at least four vegetables each day” or to “avoid sugar on weekdays.” Creating more specific resolutions will ensure we can actually get them done and we can feel accomplished!

Try creating realistic resolutions! Realistic resolutions are usually overlooked in favour of life-changing, extreme, life alterations. However, the realistic aspect of resolutions is probably the most important part. By making our resolutions realistic, we make sure we are able to commit to them. For example, someone could make a resolution to “go to the gym five times a week.” While this resolution is specific enough, it might not be completely reasonable for someone to do. Instead consider the resolution to “workout twice a week, at home or at the gym.” With a small change, this resolution has become easier to achieve and is no longer so overwhelming.

Keeping up with resolutions

Great! We have made a few specific and realistic resolutions and we are ready to get started. The most important part of New Year’s resolutions is also very difficult to do: upholding resolutions. However, there are a couple of ways that make upholding resolutions easier.

Resolutions are definitely easier and more fun when we do them together. Support groups can really help us accomplish our resolutions. Not only do friends provide us with help and, sometimes, guidance, they also can contribute some motivation to our resolutions.
