With the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions, many clubs have returned to Sentinel! Clubs are a fantastic way to meet new people, explore curiosities, and discover unexpected interests. In this article, we interviewed three clubs you should definitely consider joining!
STEM Club
1. Please introduce us to your club!
“Our club is led by a team of ambitious students hoping to incite STEM interest by engaging Sentinel students in various STEM activities to learn about the university and professional experiences of the STEM field.”
2. What kind of people do you think are suited for your club?
“The events that we host are most suitable for passionate STEM enthusiasts that are eager to delve deeper into their STEM subject of interest and to seek more learning opportunities in that field…However, [this] club also focuses on providing beginner activities for those who may only consider STEM to be a potential field of interest.”
3. Are there any special opportunities or experiences that your club has to offer?
“Since September, [STEM Fellowship included] events [that] have been organized by theme each month and include STEM workshops, expert talks, and fun activities.”
“Two other special events we organize are our university panels with undergraduate students in STEM programs of the top universities in Canada, and our STEM Mentorship Program designed for grades 8-11 to further explore their STEM field of interest and prepare for university applications with top senior students.”
4. When and where do the club meetings take place?
“Our meetings take place in Room 351 on Fridays at lunch or virtually Fridays at 4PM due to COVID restrictions.”

Sentinel Tutors Club
1. What does your club offer and what is its objective?
“Our club offers free one-on-one tutoring, pairing younger students with qualified, older peers in subjects like science, english, and more!”
“Our goal is to provide an accessible resource for students in need of academic assistance.”
2. How are the tutoring sessions arranged? (ie. how do tutors/tutees get paired, is it 1-on-1, timing?)
“Our process ensures that an optimal pairing is made to benefit both the student and tutor. The decisions are based on the tutee’s needs and if the tutor is qualified to help them.”
“Moreover, the availability of both parties is looked at to ensure that the pairing is able to meet regularly.”
3. Do you provide training for tutors?
“Yes! The tutors go through one training process to ensure that they are qualified to teach.”
“The debriefing is held within a group and has a relaxed environment to keep the training easy to follow and understand.”
4. Is there anything else we should know about your club?
“We wish to foster a safe learning environment within the school especially with the pandemic’s toll on learning.”
“We’re also always open to new tutors and students! Now that a new semester has taken place we look forward to new students.”
