Sentinel is quite well known for its English courses, but it is worth noting that Sentinel also happens to boast a very impressive French immersion program. The students in this program have either taken French courses since kindergarten (as early immersion students) or since grade six (as late immersion students). Nonetheless, both groups will eventually graduate with a Dual Dogwood degree. The French immersion program does not only include the French course taken by students, but it also encompasses many other opportunities to become immersed in the French language either around the school or on excursions.
Some of the newer activities available around Sentinel this year are the “Comité de Français” and French Yoga. The “Comité de Français” is composed of 15-20 students from a mix of all grades who are divided into three subdivisions: merchandise, traveling, and trips/activities near the school. They meet once or twice a month with the goal of brainstorming ideas in each subdivision to help improve students’ connection with the language while creating a more active French environment within the school. Also, through the use of google classroom, the “Comité de Français” attempts to get a wider sense of the school’s interests with frequent polls and questionnaires.
They are welcoming more help and if you are passionate about the French language, this is the place to be. French yoga was recently stopped after the winter break due to a lack of participation. If more students show their interest, hopefully, this weekly tradition can become adopted again (as participants, it was always nice to relax and practice our French). With growing opportunities for students to immerse themselves more fully in this program, it would be exciting to the French language and its culture being celebrated and used beyond a classroom setting.
