½ of the banners for each snow season have been won by Sentinel’s phenomenal ski and snowboard team. Say what? Yes, ½ !
Here are some fun facts/notable achievements of Sentinel’s ski/snowboard team:
- llustrious alumni including Maëlle Ricker (class of ‘96), snowboarding Olympian and the 1st Canadian woman to win gold on home soil. Talk about amazing.
- 2018 – Silver, 2017 – Gold, and 2016 – Bronze for the combined overall Boys and Girls Snowboard at Provincials
- Top Ski and Snowboard team in the past 10 years in the North Shore
- Best Snowboard team in the past 5 years in the Lower Mainland
- Also the best Team Gear: team-designed logos on the Ski and Snowboard hoodies, found everywhere in the halls
Says long-time coach Mr. Glenn Johnston about goals for the season:
“First and foremost, we want to have FUN. We accept all skiers and snowboarders and as long as you know how to ski or ride, we will teach you how to race… We have taken students in grade 8 who have never raced before and seen them graduate as some of the top racers in the province!!!
Our goal is to win some North Shore Championships Banners and to qualify for Provincials in Smithers, BC.”
If anyone still wants to join the team, it’s not too late: please see Mr. or Mrs Johnston in Room 149B or 202, or email at gjohnston@wvschools.ca.
The team’s first game of the season will take place at Terrain GS at Whistler Blackcomb on January 24. Go Spartans!
